At Sterling, innovation is at the heart of everything we do. When faced with the challenge of bringing charity lottery ticket sales into retail stores, we recognised an opportunity to transform the process for our clients and their customers. Charities often operate with separate teams for retail operations and lottery fundraising, making integration a potential challenge. Our mission was clear: to innovate, simplify, and create new opportunities for both charities and their supporters.

The Challenge

Charities typically have two separate functions for retail and lottery ticket sales. This separation posed two challenges.

First, integrating lottery ticket sales into retail stores required a system that could bridge this operational gap seamlessly.

Second, the existing lottery ticket sales process in stores was time-consuming and reliant on manual data exchange, making it less appealing for volunteers and staff. Collecting personal data, administering training for the sale of lottery tickets and promoting lottery sales in-store posed difficulties, especially in busy retail environments, and with the lack of a streamlined solution.

The Solution: EPOS Integration

Sterling’s innovative solution was the development of a bespoke EPOS (Electronic Point of Sale) integration, designed to revolutionise how lottery tickets are sold in retail stores. This system allows for one-off ticket sales with unparalleled ease. Here’s how it works:

  • Seamless Ticket Sales: The EPOS system enables a lucky dip-style sale, automatically generating and allocating a lottery number the moment a ticket is purchased. The customer’s receipt, printed directly at the till, serves as their proof of entry, complete with their lottery number and all required compliance information.
  • Effortless Data Handling: By eliminating the need for personal data collection, we removed the inconvenience of the process for volunteers and staff by reducing the time required for each transaction, making it an efficient and user-friendly process.
  • Real-Time Integration: Our system operates in real-time, ensuring that ticket purchases are immediately registered. This mirrors the experience of purchasing a National Lottery ticket, creating a familiar and engaging interaction for customers.

The Result

The implementation of our EPOS integration has created a fully integrated solution for charities to sell lottery tickets in their retail stores. Customers can now purchase tickets effortlessly, and charities can promote their lotteries with confidence, knowing the process is simple and efficient.

We work with many large national charities, including Cancer Research UK and Sue Ryder. Some clients have over 500 shops, and as of January 2025 we have implemented our EPOS ticket sales system in over 1,000 shops across the UK.

Charities that have adopted this solution have seen increased ticket sales and improved engagement with their supporters. The streamlined process has also empowered retail staff and volunteers, allowing them to focus on providing excellent customer service rather than navigating complex sales procedures.
